News: ASOC and the PAO wishes you a Merry Christmas!
Public Affairs Office Announcement
ASOC and the PAO would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas! Here is a short summary for those of you who may not celebrate it, if any:

Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual holiday that, for Christians, commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated on December 25th, but this date is not known to be Jesus' actual birthday, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived, a historical Roman festival, or the date of the northern hemisphere's winter solstice. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

Although traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians, and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas, including North America, Australia, The United Kingdom and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.

The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree:  the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
Burton Hillis

There has been only one Christmas - the rest are anniversaries.
W.J. Cameron

Christmas is a time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it.  Deficits are when adults tell the government what they want and their kids pay for it.
Richard Lamm

Roses are reddish
Violets are bluish
If it weren't for Christmas
We'd all be Jewish.
Benny Hill

News: ASOC and the PAO wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving
ASOC News
ASOC and the PAO would like to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving! Here is a short summary for those of you who may not celebrate it:

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, at the end of the harvest season is and annual American Federal Holiday to express thanks for ones material possessions. Most people celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast. Though the holiday's origins can be traced to harvest festivals which have been celebrated in cultures since the ancient times, the American holiday has religious undertones related to the deliverance of the English settlers by Native Americans after the brutal winter at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
-
"Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence."
Erma Bombeck
-
"Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving."
W.T. Purkiser
